Area of Refuge & Elevator Communication enabled by Cellular Technology

Design, installation, and testing of code-compliant elevator emergency communication systems in accordance with California Building Code, California Fire Code, NFPA 72, and ASME A17.1 requirements, including monitoring integration and emergency response connectivity.

Elevator emergency communication systems and Area of Refuge (AOR) communication systems are critical life-safety features designed to ensure occupants can request assistance during emergencies such as power outages, entrapments, fire events, or mechanical failures. These systems provide a direct and reliable two-way communication link between occupants and a constantly monitored location, allowing emergency responders or building personnel to coordinate assistance quickly and effectively.

These systems are required by applicable safety regulations and building codes, including the California Building Code, the California Fire Code, NFPA 72, and ASME A17.1. Elevator communication systems are also required under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), which mandates accessible two-way communication capability in elevators serving public and commercial facilities. Similarly, Area of Refuge communication systems are required in specific occupancy types to provide a means of assistance for individuals who cannot use stairs during an emergency.

Modern emergency communication systems must be fully accessible, reliable, and code-compliant, ensuring proper integration with fire alarm and emergency response systems. Correct design, installation, and testing are essential to maintain system integrity and compliance while supporting safe evacuation and first responder coordination.
